3 cups (750 mL)
Ingredients
Serves: 4
- 2 tsp (10 mL) chili powder
- 1 tsp (5 mL) garlic powder
- ½ tsp (2.5 mL) onion powder
- ½ tsp (2.5 mL) salt
- 2 Tbsp (30 mL) canola or vegetable oil
- ½ cup (125 mL) popcorn kernels
Instructions
- In a small bowl, stir together chili, garlic and onion powders and salt. Set aside.
- Heat oil in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat. Add popcorn kernels and cover with a tight-fitting lid.
- Once the first kernels start to pop, reduce heat to medium and continue cooking and shaking the pan until the popping becomes less frequent, about 3 minutes.
- Toss hot popped corn with seasoning mixture and serve.
Tips:
- Nutrition know-how: Did you know that 3 cups (750 mL) of popcorn provides just under 20 g of carbohydrate and 4 grams of fibre. Pair it with a little protein for a lower-carbohydrate, higher-fibre snack.
- Alternate method: If you have a hot-air popcorn popper, you can use that to pop the kernels. Drizzle the oil evenly over the hot popped corn before tossing with the spice mixture.
- Make it sweet: Instead of the savoury spices, you could make a sweet version with 2 tsp (10 mL) brown sugar, 1 tsp (5 mL) cocoa powder and ½ tsp (2.5 mL) ground cinnamon.
