Diabetes Canada has received inquiries in recent months from concerned individuals who have not been able to find the injectable glucagon products, critical for many who depend on it for the treatment of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

We have recently contacted Health Canada for added clarity on the availability of injectable glucagon.

In 2023, Health Canada had been working with the US-based pharmaceutical company, Amphastar, to import their glucagon injectable product to address the discontinuations of injectable glucagon products (Glucagon for injection, rDNA origin & GlucaGen Hypokit rDNA origin) announced by the two manufacturers in Canada: Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk.

Health Canada has informed us that they continue to work with Amphastar. Amphastar’s US-authorized Glucagon Injection was added to the List of drugs for exceptional importation and sale on May 19, 2023. Drugs on this list are eligible for exceptonal importation into Canada. Health Canada has also updated us that they continue to work to ensure continued Glucagon Injection access in Canada.

People living with diabetes who use these products and have concerns about their availability are urged to speak to their healthcare team, including their physicians or pharmacists.

For additional information please contact Amphastar Customer Service at 1-800-423-4136 or info@amphastar.com.
