The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced its 2024 Budget which includes the expansion of its continuous glucose monitor (CGM) program. Diabetes Canada has long been advocating for increased access to diabetes medications and devices, so we welcome the news as a positive step in the right direction.

Almost $1.8 million will be provided to expand coverage of CGMs; funding that will go towards supporting people living with type 1 diabetes up to the age of 25 who are enrolled in the Newfoundland/Labrador Insulin Pump Program, as well as pregnant people with gestational diabetes.

The previous program in Newfoundland & Labrador was only a pilot program for paediatric patients, under 18, at the Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre, so establishing the program as permanent is also progress.

All available evidence shows that isCGM and rtCGM technology to be transformative for many people living with diabetes. Diabetes Canada will continue to advocate to the government of Newfoundland and Labrador that access should be extended to all residents for whom these systems have been shown to provide positive benefits to their diabetes management.
