Diabetes Canada is excited to see Prince Edward Island (PEI) join Manitoba and British Columbia as the third province to sign a pharmacare agreement with the Government of Canada. We applaud today’s announcement of a $30 million federal investment in pharmacare, which includes access to diabetes medications, supplies and devices.
“This investment will impact almost 18,000 people who have been diagnosed with diabetes in PEI, easing the burden on both healthcare systems and individuals' financial and physical wellbeing,” says Glenn Thibeault Executive Director, Government Affairs, Advocacy & Policy for Diabetes Canada. “We are also pleased at how quickly Islanders will see the impacts of this agreement, as coverage is rolling out as early as this May.”
According to the Government of Canada, PEI residents can anticipate beginning to receive coverage for most of these products by May 1, 2025.
The government also announced a $10 million investment in funding for rare diseases medications.
Better access to life-saving diabetes medications
People living with diabetes in PEI will directly benefit from this agreement, ensuring cost is not a barrier to accessing the essential medications they need to manage their condition and prevent complications.
Diabetes Devices and Supplies
The agreement includes funding for better access to diabetes devices and supplies, aligning with Diabetes Canada’s long-standing advocacy for a federal device fund to improve affordability and accessibility of critical diabetes management tools.
Reducing Health Disparities
Ensuring access to diabetes medications and devices is essential to improving health equity and long-term outcomes for people living in Canada with diabetes, particularly in underserved communities.
