Diabetes Canada applauds today’s announcement of a $267 million federal investment in pharmacare, which will include coverage of diabetes medications and improved access to diabetes devices and supplies in Manitoba.

“This announcement marks a milestone in improving diabetes care in Canada,” says Laura Syron, Diabetes Canada President & CEO. “We welcome this progress and hope to see continued collaboration between federal, provincial, and territorial governments on more pharmacare agreements in the near future—ensuring all people with diabetes, no matter where they live, have the support they need to manage their condition and live well.”

This investment will impact over 150,000 people who have been diagnosed with diabetes in Manitoba (11% of people living in the province), easing the burden on both healthcare systems and people's financial and physical wellbeing.

Better access to life-saving diabetes medications
People living with diabetes in Manitoba will directly benefit from this agreement, ensuring cost is not a barrier to accessing the essential medications they need to manage their condition and prevent complications.

Diabetes devices and supplies
The agreement includes funding for better access to diabetes devices and supplies, aligning with Diabetes Canada’s long-standing advocacy for a federal device fund to improve affordability and accessibility of critical diabetes management tools.

Reducing health disparities
Ensuring access to diabetes medications and devices is essential to improving health equity and long-term outcomes for people living in Canada with diabetes, particularly in underserved communities.

According to the Government of Canada, Manitoba residents can anticipate beginning to receive coverage for most of these products in June 2025.
