Diabetes Canada welcomes the release of Budget 2025 and the federal government’s ongoing commitment to protecting pharmacare, advancing research and innovation, and improving health outcomes for Canadians. With more than 4 million people in Canada diagnosed with diabetes, we look forward to working collaboratively with the government to ensure these commitments translate into meaningful impacts for those affected by this relentless condition.
Protecting access to diabetes care under pharmacare
We are encouraged by the federal government’s commitment to “protecting pharmacare” and to maintaining the vital social programs that Canadians rely on. As outlined in Diabetes Canada’s Pharmacare Policy Position, we are calling on this government to safeguard uninterrupted and equitable access to essential diabetes medications and devices. This must remain a priority as pharmacare implementation continues.
Driving research and innovation for better outcomes
Diabetes Canada welcomes the $1.7 billion investment over the next decade to attract and retain world-class research talent. Continued investment in health research and innovation not only drives discovery but also translates into healthier communities and a stronger, more resilient economy. For the diabetes community, this means greater potential to accelerate the implementation of the Framework for Diabetes in Canada, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and advance patient-centred innovation that improves lives across all communities.
Improving access to diabetes technologies
While the budget makes important commitments, the absence of a dedicated federal Diabetes Device Access Fund remains a missed opportunity. Life-saving technologies — including insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring systems — are still out of reach for too many Canadians due to uneven provincial coverage and affordability barriers. Establishing a national device-access initiative would help ensure equitable care across Canada.
Looking ahead
Systemic change takes time and coordination. During Diabetes Awareness Month, we are reminded of the urgency and opportunity to improve outcomes for the millions of Canadians affected by diabetes. Diabetes Canada is encouraged by the federal government’s continued engagement with health stakeholders and stands ready to work with our partners in government, research, and health care to ensure these priorities are reflected in future policy and funding decisions.
Together, we can build a healthier, more equitable future for all people in Canada affected by diabetes.
