Today, Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, announced $998,450 in funding over three years to Diabetes Canada.
This announcement from the Government of Canada of nearly $1million over three years will allow Diabetes Canada to begin the critical work of implementing the recommendations and strategies laid out in the Framework for Diabetes.
Diabetes Canada led a nationwide campaign to secure this Framework, with the goal of creating a common policy direction for addressing the growing epidemic of diabetes and ensuring better health outcomes. We are incredibly proud to continue to play a role in advancing this critical work and look forward to leading in the development of an action plan in the coming months—alongside key leaders and stakeholder groups.
By applying the latest innovation and best practices we hope to identify the right programs, resources and supports that will help to improve the quality of life for people living with diabetes.
“As a mother of a child with type 1 diabetes, I have seen firsthand the mental, emotional, and financial stress this condition places on not only those living with diabetes, but their families too,” says Terezinha Hignett. “As an advocate, I have also seen the inequities in access to medicine, devices, and healthcare across the country. The Framework for Diabetes brings hope to the 11.9 million people living with diabetes and prediabetes in Canada - it lays the groundwork for an integrated approach to addressing the diabetes epidemic in this country.”
Provincial and territorial governments have also been developing their strategies, frameworks and initiatives and we are confident that this work will help support and advance these efforts as well.
This announcement marks another step forward in our journey toward building a Canada free from the effects of diabetes.
