Diabetes Canada applauds today’s announcement of a $670 million federal investment in pharmacare, which includes access to diabetes medications, devices and supplies.
“It is great to see these provincial pharmacare agreements come to life, and we look forward to seeing the on-the-ground impact this will have on people with diabetes in BC,” says Glenn Thibeault Executive Director, Government Affairs, Advocacy & Policy for Diabetes Canada. “These agreements will allow more folks to access more of the medications, devices and supplies they need to manage their diabetes well—and that is terrific news.”
This investment will impact over 550,000 people who have been diagnosed with diabetes in British Columbia (10% of people living in the province), easing the burden on both healthcare systems and individuals' financial and physical wellbeing.
According to the Government of Canada, BC residents can anticipate beginning to receive coverage for most of these products in a year from now (March 2026).
Better access to life-saving diabetes medications
People living with diabetes in BC will directly benefit from this agreement, ensuring cost is not a barrier to accessing the essential medications they need to manage their condition and prevent complications.
Diabetes Devices and Supplies
The agreement includes funding for better access to diabetes devices and supplies, aligning with Diabetes Canada’s long-standing advocacy for a federal device fund to improve affordability and accessibility of critical diabetes management tools.
Reducing Health Disparities
Ensuring access to diabetes medications and devices is essential to improving health equity and long-term outcomes for people living in Canada with diabetes, particularly in underserved communities.
