Are you newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and looking for information to get you started, or need a refresher on diabetes management?

Diabetes Canada's virtual diabetes education program provides the option to learn practical, up-to-date tips and tricks at your own pace, and have your questions answered in live, online sessions. You can explore the basics of diabetes management with our video recordings, and dive deeper into specific topics with our bonus monthly topics.

The program content is most applicable to managing Type 2 diabetes, but could benefit others living with or caring for people with different types of diabetes.

How to get the most from the program:

  • Register for one of the scheduled live Q&As below. You will be given access to two videos to watch. Pick a date that will allow you enough time to watch the videos.
  • Watch the recordings.
  • Attend the live Q&A you have registered for. Bring questions you may have after watching the recordings.
  • Register separately for one of our bonus monthly topics – attend as many of the bonus sessions as you would like.

The videos cover:

  • General information about diabetes – what it is, what happens in the body, types of diabetes.
  • Feelings and emotions about having diabetes.
  • Targets for A1C, blood glucose levels, blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • Basics of monitoring your blood glucose and acting on the results.
  • Overview of common medications for diabetes and preventing complications.
  • Basics of food, nutrition and physical activity and its impact on living well.
  • Impact of different foods on blood sugar.
  • Strategies for balanced eating and incorporating physical activity into your lifestyle.
  • Importance of goal setting.

The bonus sessions will expand on some of the basic diabetes management topics from recordings. Each session will feature:
  • Evidence-based knowledge on the topic and practical tips.
  • Opportunities to ask questions about how to apply the information to your diabetes management practices.

Click on the “Register” button beside the sessions you would like to attend. You will be taken to the registration page for that session. Sessions are on Thursdays, from 7 p.m – 8 p.m Eastern Standard Time via Zoom.

Be sure to click on the “Add to calendar” button in your confirmation email to put the Q&A in your calendar. You will also get a reminder the day before and an hour before the session.
