Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which your body’s pancreas cannot make enough insulin or does not properly use the insulin it makes. When the body cannot use the insulin properly, that is called insulin resistance.

Insulin is a hormone that helps your body’s cells use blood glucose (also known as blood sugar) for energy. If blood sugar cannot get into your cells, then it builds up in the bloodstream (known as hyperglycemia or high blood sugar) and can damage the blood vessels over time. The damage can lead to complications, such as an increased risk of heart and kidney disease, as well as vision issues and loss of feeling in the hands and feet. Managing blood sugar levels can help reduce the risk of complications.

Type 2 diabetes is a complex condition with many risk factors, and accounts for 90-95% of diabetes cases in Canada.

Important Note: If you are feeling very thirsty, feeling very weak, peeing more than usual over several days, feeling confused or unable to think clearly, or having blurry vision or loss of vision – you may be in a hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS). It happens when blood sugars are extremely high or from an illness or infection, severe dehydration or after having a heart attack. If you think you are experiencing HHS, please get medical help immediately!
