program 0:21 and a little bit about myself uh my 0:23 background is in nutrition and food and 0:26 teaching as well and my interests are uh 0:29 Fitness 0:30 and healthy recipe development as well 0:34 my name is Christina I am also a health 0:36 coach that's aiding in facilitating this 0:40 program um my background is in 0:42 Psychology I always like to coach from a 0:45 strength-based perspective and my 0:47 interests include gardening you know 0:50 creating healthy delicious meals and 0:53 going for walks with my 0:55 dogs great and so let's answer the 0:58 question what is the CDP 1:00 so the Canadian diabetes prevention 1:02 program is a clinical study that aims to 1:06 prevent or delay the start of type two 1:08 diabetes in Canadians the risk of type 2 1:11 diabetes is increasing among Canadians 1:14 and the disease puts a major burden on 1:17 individuals and the Health Care system 1:19 as well for Canadians the cdpp is 1:23 modeled in part after a similar program 1:26 that's been developed by the Centers for 1:29 Disease control and prevention in the 1:31 United States uh the US program was 1:34 based on a la Landmark study showing 1:37 that people at risk for type 2 diabetes 1:40 who take part in a structured lifestyle 1:42 Management program can cut their future 1:45 risk for developing type 2 diabetes by 1:48 58% and also 71% for people over the age 1:52 of 60 years old yes and the Canadian uh 1:56 study plans to enroll over 2,000 adults 1:59 across Canada over four years um 2:03 specifically this the program will test 2:06 if individualized oneon-one lifestyle 2:09 Health coaching provided via the 2:11 telephone along with online educational 2:14 resources are effective in reducing the 2:17 risk of type two diabetes and 2:20 Canadians we hope that answered your 2:22 question and now we'll hand it over to 2:24 Dr bage thank 2:28 you 2:32 my name is harit Bajaj I'm an 2:34 endocrinologist so a hormone specialist 2:38 physician um um which includes diabetes 2:41 and other related diseases as well and 2:44 I'm the principal investigator on 2:46 Canadian diabetes prevention program 2:48 I'll address the question um uh I live 2:51 with pre-diabetes so how can 2:54 cdpp impact me or help 2:57 me first of all I'll I'll say that 3:00 pre-diabetes is one of the risk factors 3:03 for developing diabetes and the cdpp 3:06 which is the Canadian diabetes 3:08 prevention program is uh designed to 3:12 exactly uh help people at high risk for 3:15 developing type to diabetes to either 3:17 delay or prevent the onset of type two 3:20 diabetes by helping participants develop 3:23 and practice sustainable health habits 3:26 in addition to reducing the risk of type 3:28 two diabetes other chronic health 3:31 conditions including heart disease 3:34 stroke and some types of cancers may 3:37 also be reduced uh and it may improve 3:40 your overall well-being as well if you 3:43 enroll in the Canadian diabetes 3:45 prevention program you will follow a 3:46 structured program of healthy eating and 3:48 physical activity for about a year and 3:52 there are no clinical treatments or 3:54 medications that are being tested u in 3:56 this program is purely a lifestyle based 4:00 intervention so no medications will be 4:03 prescribed to you in the program uh the 4:05 only requirements are measurements so 4:08 weight measurement waist circumference 4:10 measurement and some lab tests that are 4:12 done only twice in the program so one at 4:15 the beginning of the program and and one 4:17 at the end of the program which is 4:19 usually one 4:20 year of course you will continue to take 4:23 your usual medications for other 4:25 conditions and continue to seek medical 4:28 advice and Care from your usual 4:30 healthcare provider during this one-year 4:33 program now during this one-year program 4:35 in addition to your usual care from your 4:38 provider you will work with one-on-one 4:40 with a professional health coach to make 4:43 lifestyle changes to improve your health 4:45 and reduce your risk of developing type 4:47 two 4:48 diabetes Now with this program while the 4:51 results May Vary from participant to 4:54 participant if you follow the program 4:56 guidelines you may experience uh many 4:59 improvements in your overall lifestyle 5:01 and health which may include loss of 5% 5:06 on an average initial weight uh if 5:08 you're overweight especially reduce 5:11 Weist circumference especially if you 5:13 tend to store excess fat in your 5:14 abdominal area reduce or maintain blood 5:17 sugar level in the normal 5:20 range participate in a minimum of 150 5:23 minutes per week which is the 5:25 recommended time limit for modate to 5:27 vigorous intensity aerobic phys physical 5:30 activity also gain more ability to 5:33 follow a meal plan that provide 5:34 nutrients for good health and energy for 5:37 maintaining a healthy weight and 5:40 increase your knowledge
