At D-Camps, kids with type 1 diabetes get to be kids first. They paddle, climb, sing around the fire, and stay up too late, all in the care of staff and medical professionals who know exactly what they're doing.
What makes it different is who's there. Every camper, every counsellor, every cabinmate gets it. The check before lunch, the low at midnight, the questions no one at school knows how to ask. Here, none of that is unusual. It's just camp. Kids leave with new friends, new skills, and the quiet confidence that comes from knowing they're not the only one.
Before camp, my daughter felt like she was the only kid dealing with type 1 diabetes. After just one week at D-Camps, she came home more confident, independent, and excited about managing her diabetes. She still talks to the friends she met there almost every day.
