Your participation
As a valuable stakeholder in the support of Canadians living with and affected by diabetes, we know you are committed to learning more about the 100th Anniversary of the discovery of insulin and our accompanying campaign, “We can’t wait another 100 years to End Diabetes”. By sharing this stakeholder toolkit, we hope that you can help increase awareness about the urgency of diabetes in Canada and enhance efforts to End Diabetes.
Campaign background
The discovery of insulin in Canada ranks among the leading achievements of medical research. 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of this discovery. Diabetes Canada will commemorate the anniversary of the discovery of insulin, and even more importantly, the 100th anniversary of an incredible, almost miraculous, change in life expectancy and quality of life for millions of people around the world. However, insulin is not enough.
Goals: Beginning on January 14, 2021 and running until December 2021, the ‘We can’t wait another 100 years’ campaign will serve to commemorate the discovery of insulin, but also create urgency about diabetes. It will highlight the prevalence, most life-threatening consequences (amputations, blindness, heart disease) as well as the financial burden (costs) of the disease on the millions of people living with diabetes and federal and provincial governments.
It will also look to ignite a national conversation: although the 100th anniversary is an incredible discovery; insulin is not enough. It’s the starting line, not the finish line for diabetes. ‘We can’t wait another 100 years’ to End Diabetes. Our campaign will inspire Canadians to raise awareness and/or funds to help support the work led by Diabetes Canada to help End Diabetes, which includes funding leading-edge research that we hope will one day lead us towards a cure.
