Get Involved in Diabetes Research

There are many ways to be involved in research activities at Diabetes Canada. If you have experience as a person living with diabetes, a caregiver, or family member, you have a unique expertise that can contribute to diabetes research. By getting involved, people with lived experience with diabetes (PWLE) can help improve the relevance and value of diabetes research and help to inform Diabetes Canada research funding decisions.

Become a PWLE Reviewer for Diabetes Canada

Part of Diabetes Canada’s research funding criteria require that research is relevant and valuable to the people that it affects, and that the research impact is clearly communicated. Each year, a diverse review panel of PWLE is formed with this goal in mind and are tasked with reviewing and scoring key parts of research funding applications.

The Role of a PWLE Reviewer: PWLE reviewers review the lay language summary, patient engagement and knowledge translation plan, and impact statement of research applications being considered for funding by Diabetes Canada. This review panel provides a unique perspective that helps ensure that research is communicated clearly and aligned with Diabetes Canada’s mission.

Compensation: PWLE Reviewers for Diabetes Canada are provided with compensation of $30/hour for up to 40 hours (includes time spent on orientation and training).

Become a PWLE Partner in a Research Project

Diabetes researchers may seek PWLE to participate in their research study in an advisory or information sharing capacity. Diverse perspectives in lived experience are encouraged to apply unique and valuable insight to a research project.

The role of a PWLE Partner in Research: PWLE Partners can be actively engaged in governance, priority setting, developing the research questions, and even performing certain parts of the research itself. PWLE Partners may also serve an important role of summarizing and sharing results with target audiences and communities, as well as conveying to policy makers and other decision makers the direct impact of this work. Opportunities in each research project vary.

Please note that the specific role of the PWLE partner and any orientation or training required will vary depending on the needs of the research project and will be managed by the research project team.

Clinical trials are research studies that engage human participants to test the safety or effect of a medical, surgical, or behavioral intervention on health outcomes. This is an important step in helping diabetes researchers look for new ways to prevent, screen for, or treat diabetes and related conditions.
