The Board of Directors of Diabetes Canada is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jan Hux as Diabetes Canada President and CEO effective September 7, 2018.

Canada is facing a diabetes epidemic with one in three, or approximately 11 million Canadians, living with diabetes or prediabetes. The current estimated growth rate of diabetes in Canada indicates that young people at age 20 face a one in two lifetime risk of developing diabetes.

“Dr. Hux is an accomplished strategic leader who brings exceptional insight into the diabetes epidemic and is best positioned to guide the organization as it executes a renewed strategy of delivering a greater impact to those affected by or at risk of diabetes at a broader population level,” said Diabetes Canada Board of Directors Chair, Jim Newton. “She will guide the organization through the transformation needed to deliver against our mission to prevent, care for those affected and cure diabetes.”

In order to stem the tide of the epidemic, Diabetes Canada is evolving and shifting to deliver impact at a population level rather than only reaching individuals at a community level. To do this, we are reallocating resources to focus on advocating for healthy public policy, driving exceptional diabetes care, promoting research towards a cure and enhancing our digital delivery consistent with the needs of those we serve today and the desires of our donors.

Jan brings years of experience as a clinician scientist to her role, where she gained front line clinical experience in General Internal Medicine and led the diabetes health services research program at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) in Toronto.  She was also interim CEO and Chief Operating Officer at ICES. She remains an affiliate scientist at ICES and member of the University of Toronto Department of Medicine.

Jan has already made significant contributions to Diabetes Canada. In 2012,  Dr. Hux joined Diabetes Canada, and in her roles as Chief Science Officer and, more recently President, she has been a vocal advocate for the diabetes cause and for the need to drive change at the system level to prevent type 2 diabetes and to improve health outcomes for those living with diabetes. She is a visionary and believes strongly in collaborating with colleagues, volunteers and donors to encourage transformation. She has also worked with all levels of government to inform better policy that impacts all of those affected or at risk of diabetes.

The epidemic we face requires us to take bold action to end diabetes. We are confident that under Dr. Hux’s strategic leadership, Diabetes Canada will deliver greater impact for the population affected by diabetes and for all Canadians.

The Board of Directors of Diabetes Canada is also pleased to appoint John Reidy as Chief Operating Officer. His skills and insights have been important in supporting the organization as Acting CEO over the last year through a period of fiscal challenge and his leadership has been critical in enabling the successes we have achieved and the necessary changes that the organization has had to undertake to deliver against its mission.
