Remember when you were a child? You probably spent time worrying about which outfit you wanted to wear for picture day or begging your mom for money to get an ice cream cone from the ice cream man. For many children diagnosed with diabetes, these worries are nothing compared to the reality of living day to day with this disease. For many with diabetes, there is no one else in their school or community with the disease, and they can struggle with being open about it. A diagnosis also brings new skills for kids to learn, from how to test their blood sugar, and recognize a high or low, to maintain a balance between food, insulin and activity.

Goals for Diabetes was inspired by Geovani, a little boy diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes at the age of four. For Geovani and his family, this was a life-altering diagnosis but that did not stop them from taking action! Geovani wants to help as many kids as he can attend Diabetes Canada’s D-Camps this summer. A celebration hosted around the inner child in us all, Goals for Diabetes aims to engage more than 500 guests; community & business leaders and supporters from across the Vaughan Region. “Although he's surrounded by so much love, his struggles are our struggles and we want to help him and anyone that is struggling with this disease.”

At Diabetes Canada D-Camps, kids get a break from being different. It is one of the few places where everyone gets it, and nothing has to be explained. Ninety percent of campers say they’ve gained tools to manage their diabetes.
