Type 1 diabetes can change a child’s life

With your help, D-Camps can, too.

Help send more kids to D-Camps

Type 1 diabetes can make some kids feel different from their friends.

A type 1 diabetes (T1D) diagnosis brings with it a whole new set of skills to learn, including testing blood glucose (sugar) levels, priming needles for injection, and counting a daily intake of carbs. For many children and youth, there is no one else in their school or community who has type 1 diabetes, and it can be challenging to accept a diagnosis.

Diabetes Canada’s D-Camps are the only national, medically supervised camp programs for children living with T1D. D-Camps provides children living with T1D a real summer camp experience and the opportunity to connect with other kids who truly understand them.

The goal of D-Camps is for campers is to gain a new level of independence in managing their type 1 diabetes and feel empowered to continue using the healthy practices they learned.

"The most important part for my daughter was feeling like she wasn’t the only one in the whole world with type 1 diabetes."

“My child is the only child in our community with type 1. Camp allows her to see there are more kids out there just like her, (and) to not feel alone or isolated with her disease.”
