Tannis & Bill Charles photoYou’re changing lives for people like Tannis

Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 10 years old, Tannis Charles has lived with the challenges of this condition for almost as long as she can remember.

One of the scariest complications has been nighttime hypoglycemic unawareness, which has caused Tannis to miss her blood glucose levels crashing at night. Her husband Bill has frequently had to give her dextrose tablets while waiting for her to regain full consciousness. Tannis has also experienced scary daytime incidents of hypoglycemia.

She credits advances in technology and treatment with her good health today – the kinds of advances Diabetes Canada supporters like you make possible when you help fund promising diabetes research.

“If a cure became available, I would be speechless, amazed and even more indebted to the scientific world. I’ve already benefited so much from research.”

Thank you for helping move research forward for people like Tannis.

Dr. Brian RodriguesYou're helping researchers like Dr. Brian Rodrigues

“Diabetes-related heart disease is a serious complication and leading cause of death in Canada. We’ve identified a protein treatment that could prevent heart damage and save lives.”

The heart is a constantly beating organ that requires a steady supply of fuel for energy, which it obtains from sugar and fats. When living with diabetes, the heart has limited capacity to use sugar and must adapt to largely using fats, which leads to heart damage.

With your help, Dr. Brian Rodrigues has identified a protein produced mainly in the heart, VEGFB. It has exciting potential in the prevention of heart disease because it can shift energy production in the heart back to using sugar which in turn reduces damage.

Because there are limited therapies that target heart failure with this condition, your support of this project can make a major impact in the lives of people with diabetes who are at risk of developing heart disease. Thank you for supporting researchers like Dr. Rodrigues!

Denise Remillard photo“I dream of a cure for diabetes.

Denise Remillard is helping End Diabetes with a gift in her Will.

Denise was just a little girl when her father was diagnosed with diabetes. “The only thing I remember is when I was 4 or 5 years old, my mother called the ambulance because my father was in a coma due to diabetes.”

Both her father and uncle passed away from diabetes complications a year apart, at just 54 and 57. Her brother was in his early 20s when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. And most recently, her great niece was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 3.

“I felt anger and disbelief when she was diagnosed. This condition has affected so many of my family members, and I don’t want the next generation to have to deal with this as well.”

But Denise’s father remains an inspiration to her. “He was always hopeful that a cure would be found. My father was a very positive person. He handled his diabetes well, and always taught us to have faith in life.”

“Giving to Diabetes Canada makes me feel good as I am certain that one day we will have a cure. That is my dearest wish.”
