November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Take action to help End Diabetes

Every day, 640 Canadians are diagnosed with diabetes, or 1 person every 3 minutes—and diabetes is not slowing down.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. While there have been advances in management to better support people living with all types of diabetes, there is still no cure for the more than 11.7 million people in Canada who are living with diabetes or prediabetes.

We’ve come a long way, but there is more we can do to improve the quality of life for people living with diabetes.

That’s why we all must take action this Diabetes Awareness Month. Each of us plays an integral role in helping to End Diabetes. Even the smallest actions can add up to transformative change when we all do our part.

The facts about Diabetes.

Diabetes causes blindness, heart attack and strokes.

Our healthcare system spends almost $50 million treating diabetes every day.

Even with treatment, diabetes can reduce a person's lifespan by 5-15 years.

In 2022 alone, another 236,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with diabetes.

Take action. Make a difference.

Every action, no matter how big or small, brings us closer to a future without diabetes. It’s this collection of actions that will continue to drive progress and improve the quality of life of those living with this disease.

What action will you take this November?

  • Learning the facts about diabetes to better understand this disease
  • Reducing your risk factors for developing complications
  • Encouraging government action to fund the Diabetes Framework
  • Downloading our Eating for Wellness guide that will help you manage diabetes, one nutritious plate at a time.

Take a photo of the action you’ve taken and upload it to the End Diabetes community mosaic. Your image will be featured alongside others in our diabetes community, affirming your commitment to End Diabetes. It’s amazing to see what we can accomplish when we all come together!

We will continue to take action for people living with Diabetes.

Diabetes Canada has committed over $7.1 million towards advancing research discoveries, improving treatments and eventually finding a cure.

And that’s not all:

  • We’re urging governments to implement evidence-based prevention, screening, and treatment interventions.

  • We’re advocating tirelessly for people living with diabetes to have improved access to their medications and devices to save them money.

  • And we’ve successfully advocated for a new diabetes framework to address the prevalence, health consequences, and costs of diabetes. Now it's time for governments to fund the framework.

Together, the sum of our actions has the power to help End Diabetes. Take action this Diabetes Awareness Month.
