Ricky Agnihotri - Edmonton, AB
Ricky Agnihotri was a young child when his family was first affected by diabetes. He watched as his uncle suffered through complications of the disease, eventually having his legs amputated and losing his eyesight.
“I couldn’t understand why this was happening,” Ricky says. Later in his life, his mother and grandmother were also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Ricky has since learned about the complications associated with type 2 diabetes and that people of South Asian descent are at increased risk.
Ricky first became involved with the Association in 2008, when he helped start up the South Asian Diabetes Awareness committee. In 2009, he organized a successful South Asian Expo and was also awarded the Association’s Volunteer of the Year Award.
Today, Ricky is Northern Alberta’s regional chair and brings with him invaluable leadership qualities. His ability to network, negotiate and influence help him to build partnerships and connect with the community.
“Awareness is important, and that’s why it’s important for me to volunteer with the Canadian Diabetes Association,” Ricky says. “Without awareness we don’t stand a chance in preventing or adequately managing the complications associated with type 2 diabetes.”
Ricky holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biological science and a Masters in public health with specialization in health policy and management. Professionally, he is a product disease specialist in the area of cardiovascular health and metabolism with Merck Frosst.
Ricky is passionate about his involvement with the Association and is willing to do his part to help make diabetes prevention and management a number one priority in the community.
