Cardiac or other major surgery and acute myocardial infarction (MI) are all potentially life-threatening events that require intensive care. Since the publication of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) (1) in 1993 and the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) in 1998, clinicians have become convinced of the benefits of intensively-controlled glycemia in the prevention of diabetes complications and mortality.
