Making Noise in Thunder Bay

Team Diabetes participants hail from various cities and backgrounds but each has a diabetes story to tell. This month, we spoke with Brent Hawley, host of The Thunder 104.5 FM morning show in Thunder Bay, owner of 2Tone Music Productions, motorcycle enthusiast, community leader and friend to share his story on why he runs with Team Diabetes. Like many of his teammates, Brent and his family are directly affected by diabetes. Brent lost his uncle to diabetes complications and his father is living with diabetes. Motivated by a health scare and an awareness of the serious complications diabetes can cause, Brent made a conscious effort to change his lifestyle and get healthy!

Registration Deadlines

Reykjavik, August 24, 2013 - register by March 1. Walk or run in the “Land of Fire and Ice”! One of the most popular events on the Team Diabetes calendar, Reykjavik is the world’s most northern capital city and is surrounded by Iceland’s breathtaking landscape. It is also one of the liveliest and most modern cities on earth offering visitors a dynamic, Icelandic experience.

Conquer the Crater, Iceland, August 24, 2013 - register by March 1. Team Diabetes is excited to offer our fourth “Conquer” hike destination! Conquer the Crater is a spectacular one day hike that offers participants an amazing challenge off the beaten track. Iceland’s dramatic and unique landscape will provide a once in a lifetime hiking experience that you will not forget!

Amsterdam, October 20, 2013 - register by April 5. Featuring 165 canals with a total length of 100K, visitors soon discover why Amsterdam is nicknamed the “Venice of the North”. We are excited to return to this incredible city that also abounds with world-class museums and galleries, fine dining, beautiful parks, unique shopping and a thriving nightlife.

Travel with Team Diabetes to the “Land of Fire and Ice” to walk or run a 10K, half marathon or full marathon in Reykjavik, the world’s most northern capital; or to hike amid the stunning landscape that has made Iceland famous! This webinar will provide more details about the event and destination itself, as well as fundraising tips and ideas.

Kick your Team Diabetes fundraising campaign into high gear with our interactive, fundraising-focused webinar! Join Team Diabetes staff, participants and alumni from across the country to discuss effective fundraising, planning and execution as well as to share “team member tested” ideas that will get you to your goal. Whether you are thinking of signing up for Team Diabetes or already part of the team, this will be time well spent!

Training Tip

Running in Winter

The weather outside is frightful but running all-year round is so delightful! Even though it may be getting snowy and a little icy outside, that doesn’t mean you should stay indoors and run on the treadmill all winter. It is important to dress appropriately for running in the winter and be cautious of the extra dangers. Read on for some tips for running in the winter!
