We are currently recruiting volunteers to help with our Residential Campaign!

There are many ways that you can help us with our Residential Campaign beyond making a financial donation:

  • Canvassers (Approximately 2 hours of your time during the month of October when you will go door-to-door in your neighbourhood)
  • Kit Captains (Approximately 5 hours of your time between October and November in your neighbourhood. This involves administrative work and kit distribution. No canvassing involved).
  • Area Leader (Approximately 5 hours of your time between October and November in your neighbourhood. This involves administrative work and kit distribution. No canvassing involved).
  • Kit Assembly (One evening during August at our office in Downtown Winnipeg).

Every year in October across the province of Manitoba, Diabetes Canada runs an annual door-to-door fundraising Residential Campaign. Generous individuals from across the province make financial donations when volunteer canvassers knock on their doors. The money raised during this fundraiser goes towards research, advocacy and public educational programming which support individuals living with and affected by all three forms of Diabetes (type 1, type 2 and gestational).

Every 10 seconds a person in the world will die of diabetes. Over 67 000 individuals in Manitoba are living with diabetes and it is estimated that a third of individuals who have diabetes have not been diagnosed. Only with your help will we be able to help those individuals who are personally affected with diabetes find ways to live a full, healthy and active life.

Funding also supports the many programs and services offered by Diabetes Canada, including camps for children ages six to seventeen, advocacy and information for people with diabetes and those at risk. The Association also supports researchers in academic and community settings and funds health care providers’ efforts to improve the day-to-day lives of people affected by diabetes.

Diabetes Canada's successes are only realized through the generous support and guidance of our volunteers and donors.

For more information about our annual Residential Campaign, please contact our Co-ordinator of Individual Giving at (204) 925-3800 ext. 227 or e-mail us at mbinfo@diabetes.ca.

Please keep your eyes open in October for one of our volunteers who will be coming to your door and please give generously!

How to recognize a Volunteer Canvasser

With so many organizations knocking on your door to raise funds and awareness, it is important for you to feel comfortable opening your door to legitimate volunteers. Likewise, hard-working volunteers are encouraged to know that the general public is informed about what to expect from a canvasser.

  • Here is how you can recognize a Volunteer Canvasser, whether they are with Diabetes Canada, or any other not-for-profit organization:
  • The canvasser will be wearing a volunteer identification button or sticker WITH THE ORGANIZATION’S LOGO ON IT.
  • The canvasser will be able to issue you AN OFFICIAL CHARITABLE TAX RECEIPT.
  • Each receipt will have the organization’s CHARITABLE OR BUSINESS REGISTRATION NUMBER pre-printed on it.

Questions to ask

  • Exactly what organization are you representing?
  • Is there a phone number for your organization that I can call for more information?
  • Do you have an official charitable tax receipt to give me if I make a donation? MAY I SEE THE RECEIPT before I make a gift?
  • Does the receipt have a Charitable Registration or Business number printed on it?
  • Legitimate charities are REGISTERED WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
  • To check if a charity is registered, CALL 1-800-267-2384
If you have any doubts that the person at your door is not a legitimate canvasser, do not donate. Ask for the canvasser’s name and the organization they are representing and call to make sure. All charities will be pleased to send you an envelope in the mail, or take your donation over the phone.

When a canvasser comes to your door, please give generously.  For more information, please contact our Co-ordinator of Individual Giving at (204) 925-3800 ext. 227 or e-mail us at mbinfo@diabetes.ca.
