“Team Diabetes: Advocacy in action!”
By: Raeesa Lalani
Katherine Lowings and her family are something of a Team Diabetes Dream Team. Katherine discovered Team Diabetes while attending a summer camp in Alberta and proposed the idea of participating to her supportive parents, Malcolm and Majda. Not only did her parents encourage her to participate, they decided to be by her side running.
Katherine, who lives with type 1 diabetes, was thrilled. “God love my dad, he is so patient,” she says. He doesn’t focus on the time, but is very encouraging throughout the runs. The goal is to finish.” Not only that, Malcolm also carries her extra supplies and insulin with him so that she can really focus on doing her best.
“I was really driven by the fact that I had something to prove,” she recalled about her motivation to join her first event and that drive continues to propel her through more and more events. With her warm smile and supportive attitude, she has now inspired many other team members to achieve their own goals.
Katherine’s mother also participates in events and Katherine loves seeing her at the finish line or along the course route cheering for her and the rest of the Team Diabetes.
With all this love and support Katherine has accomplished her marathon goal many times, but her next big accomplishment is still in the works: advocacy. “My big focus is youth with Type 1 diabetes,” she says. As a Canadian Diabetes Association volunteer, she hopes to help and inspire others young people like her to live their best lives. With the support of her wonderful family, and a determination like no other, Katherine will no doubt continue to make a big difference in the world of diabetes.
