“O' Canada: Team Diabetes coast-to-coast”

By: Raeesa Lalani

Myth: Team Diabetes is only for people with diabetes.

Fact: Team Diabetes is a support group, fundraising platform, and healthy living advocate for anyone who wants to support those living with or affected by diabetes.

Jeremy Houden is a Team Diabetes all-star who embodies this fact. This past May, Jeremy travelled throughout Canada to three different national Team Diabetes events: Toronto, Fredericton, and Halifax. He bookended his cross-country journey with Victoria in October. Now that is dedication. The year before, he participated in the Team Diabetes event in Madrid before lacing up for events Edmonton and Saskatoon.

While Jeremy does not have diabetes, he is inspired to keep running through his experiences with those that do. He has a friend that has a child with diabetes and had a co-worker who passed from diabetes-related complications. Those experiences have affected him greatly and through his running, he is doing something about it.

Through Team Diabetes Jeremy has met many other people with diabetes and heard their stories, which has kept the flame alive. “I am committed. I would like to continue on,” he says.

As soon as he reads about a new event on the Team Diabetes calendar his mind is already working out a way to make it happen. The 2016 BMO Vancouver Marathon in May is up next.

While Jeremy is giving back through his participation, Team Diabetes is also giving back to him. “The people I meet are goal oriented achievers. Everyone sets a goal to achieve. I felt like I had a support system,” he says. “It gave me the drive to be my best. It is the hardest and most rewarding thing that I have ever done in my life. I learnt a lot about myself and others. I haven’t travelled in 20 years and the people I met we immediately became friends.”And he has now caught the travel bug.

If you go to a Team Diabetes event in the future, it’s a good bet you Jeremy Houden will be there!
