What is Clothesline and what does it do with the proceeds?

Clothesline has been a national movement since 1985.

Every year, we ask Canadians to keep Clothesline in mind when they’re cleaning and getting rid of gently used clothing, electronics and small household items.

When you donate with Clothesline, everyone wins.

One hundred per cent of net proceeds raised by Clothesline directly support the Canadian Diabetes Association and world-leading diabetes research, education and advocacy.

Donors feel good knowing their used items are going towards a worthwhile cause and that reusable items are recycled which has a positive effect on the environment.

How your donations helped the environment?

When you donate with Clothesline, you help the environment by responsibly processing your donations through the Think Recycle™ program.

Each year, the Clothesline program diverts more than 51 million kilograms of clothing from landfill sites across Canada. This translates into savings of 942 million kWh of energy - equivalent to driving a compact car more than 46,000 times around the globe - and reduces our carbon footprint by 130 million kilograms.

What is Clothesline’s partnership with Value Village?

Since 1985, the Clothesline program has enjoyed an exclusive partnership with Value Village where all items donated generate much needed funding for the CDA. Value Village is a thrift retailer, owned and operated by Savers Inc.

Through this mutually beneficial partnership, Clothesline raises $10 million annually (net), with 100 per cent directly benefiting the CDA as it continues to lead the fight against diabetes and find a cure.

Why does the Clothesline program have a business arrangement with Value Village?

The Clothesline program needs to raise funds to support the Canadian Diabetes Association and world leading research, education and advocacy.

How does the Clothesline program receive funding from Value Village?

The Clothesline program is responsible for soliciting, picking-up and delivering goods to Value Village stores. The program is paid for the volume of goods delivered. Value Village operates the retail store.

How is Clothesline different from other reusable clothing operations?

The Clothesline program will schedule regular pick-ups of reusable items at your convenience. We have a toll-free number (1-800-505-5525 residents can call anytime to schedule a pick up. We also have drop boxes located in various communities across Canada, where individuals can drop off their used clothing at anytime.

Will the money raised from this venture stay in the community?

Money raised will be identified as revenue generated from the local community. Since the CDA seeks to maximize every dollar made, money is pooled at the National level and used at all levels of the CDA. The branches use the allocated funds to run community service activities.

Does the CDA program use volunteers to seek donations of goods?

Volunteers are very important to the CDA. However, it is necessary that we have full-time staff working on our Team as volunteers require more flexibility and usually are not able to dedicate the time required.

The Clothesline program is always looking for support from corporations, local businesses, schools and communities. You can help by becoming a Drop Box host, sponsoring a community clothing drive, becoming an apartment/condominium building pick-up coordinator or arranging for your business or school to conduct a clothing drive on our behalf.
