Winnipegger runs for her son, and her country

Tags: Team Diabetes

After her son Tristan was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2006 at the age of 4, Nadia Selby‘s interest in Team Diabetes and the Canadian Diabetes Association was sparked by a news item on SHAW TV in Winnipeg. Upon learning about the fitness and fundraising challenge, she knew that signing up for the November 2009 Athens Marathon was a challenge she was meant to take on.

A first time runner, the 30 year-old had encountered a twisted ankle a few weeks from race time, but stayed with her training, and ended up triumphantly walking the full 26.2 mile course, supported by 60 other Team Diabetes participants from every Canadian province and territory – with the exception of Nunavut. She says the experience was unforgettable.

“The cheering from the crowds around us was awesome. Everyone there was so encouraging, and especially interested in my shirt, that has a picture of Tristan and the words ‘This is who I run for.’ It didn’t matter what language they spoke, people understood my goal, looked at the photo of my boy, and showed their heartfelt support.”

Nadia was so inspired by her first Team Diabetes experience that she has signed up to run with Team Diabetes at the 2010 Dublin Marathon.
