Team Diabetes returns from successful inaugural campaign at the Athens Classic Marathon

Tags: Team Diabetes

The Athens Classic Marathon was introduced as a new Team Diabetes international destination in October 2008. The marathon was organized by the Hellenic Athletics Federation and uses the original course used during the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

On Sunday, November 8, 2009, 60 Team Diabetes participants, who raised a total of $402, 000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association, set out to run the Athens Classic Marathon. They followed the original course and footsteps of Pheidippides, the legendary messenger of Ancient Athens, and finished the race at the white marble Olympic Stadium – the same spot where the original Olympic stadium stood. Participants came from all over Canada and included several nurses who work closely with people living with diabetes and see first hand what it entails to live with the disease.

The Association’s first trip to Athens was such a resounding success that Team Diabetes participant, Sara Flint of Richmond Hill, ON, was featured in the local Athens newspaper as the first Team Diabetes participant to cross the finish line.

The Association congratulates everyone who participated!
