Canadian Diabetes Association welcomes inclusion of diabetes strategy in provincial budget

FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK (March 23, 2011) – The Canadian Diabetes Association applauds the New Brunswick government’s announcement yesterday to invest in a Comprehensive Diabetes Strategy.

“The commitment made by the New Brunswick government in funding a comprehensive diabetes strategy is a step forward in the fight against diabetes,” said Michael Cloutier, President and CEO, Canadian Diabetes Association.  “We are excited to hear that the government takes the impact of this disease seriously and pleased that funding will be provided for insulin pumps and other essential supplies, as well as monitoring and education measures to address prevention issues.”

Last year, the Canadian Diabetes Association released a report that identified the growing burden of diabetes in the province.  The New Brunswick Diabetes Cost Model found that both the cost and prevalence of diabetes in the province were at dramatically high levels and, left unchecked, would continue to rise over the next decade.

It is estimated that in New Brunswick, there are currently 65,000 people diagnosed with diabetes (8.6 per cent of the population), and this will rise to 88,000 (10.9 per cent of the population) by 2020.  This challenge becomes magnified when we consider that the rate of those with undiagnosed diabetes in New Brunswick has been estimated to be as high as 30 per cent.

“Targeted investments in improving access to diabetes health services, education, medications, devices, supplies and financial support are all key elements in the prevention of diabetes and the serious medical complications associated with the disease,” continued Cloutier.  “People with diabetes in New Brunswick will benefit from this strategy and we look forward to hearing more details and working together as the Department of Health releases further information in the budget process.”
