Canadian Diabetes Association Statement on Insulin Glargine and the Possible Link to Cancer
Vincent Woo MD, FRCPC – on behalf of the Canadian Diabetes Association’s Clinical and Scientific Section
Four recent studies published in the journal Diabetalogia have suggested a link between cancer and insulin glargine (brand name: Lantus).
The reports were population-based, observational studies and showed differing results, making interpretation difficult. These types of studies are known to have many limitations and a number of biases. For example, individuals using glargine may be more likely to undergo cancer screening and detection. Randomized, controlled trials and animal studies have not detected any increased risk of cancer.
At this time, the Canadian Diabetes Association believes there is insufficient evidence to conclude that there is an increased risk of cancer with the use of insulin glargine. This issue requires more detailed analysis and further studies (including randomized, controlled studies).
The Canadian Diabetes Association advises that people with diabetes should not change insulin regimens without talking to their physician and healthcare team. Any treatment changes made without medical supervision can be dangerous. People who are concerned about these studies or their insulin regimen should talk to their doctor for more information.
Insulin glargine, which has been widely used since 2000, is an artificial form of insulin that is typically administered once a day.
