Association Pleased with New Brunswick’s Department of Health Response to Public Input

FREDERICTON, NB (September 30, 2011) – The Canadian Diabetes Association applauds the Department of Health for cancelling a proposal that would have delisted the seasonal influenza shot for high-risk populations in New Brunswick.  Last week the Association learned of the potential regulation and expressed its concern to the proposed amendment.

“We appreciate the government’s willingness to listen to the voices of New Brunswickers living with diabetes and other chronic diseases,” says Jake Reid, Regional Director, Canadian Diabetes Association. “The government’s response underlines the importance of providing public and organization feedback. The government decision to cancel the proposal to delist the seasonal influenza shot for high-risk populations in New Brunswick shows they are taking this input seriously.”

It is estimated that in New Brunswick, there are currently 65,000 people that have been diagnosed with diabetes (8.6% of the population), and this will rise to 88,000 (10.9% of the population) by 2020. People who live with chronic diseases such as diabetes are at higher risk of complications associated with influenza and therefore should receive an annual influenza vaccine.

New Brunswickers can continue to learn more about proposed regulatory changes and share individual feedback by visiting the Department of Health website www2.gnb.ca/content/gnb/en/corporate/public_review_ofdraftregulations.html
