Camp Staff
Program and Counselling Team

Our camp staff members are wonderful, enthusiastic, responsible individuals who have experience working with kids in a recreational environment. All of our staff undergo a police record check before working at camp. They also go through a three-day staff training to better understand the skills needed to be a successful camp counsellor and work with kids living with diabetes.

The counsellors are there to be very positive role models for the kids, to teach them unique skills and to challenge their ability, while keeping the philosophy of challenge by choice. Over the years we have even seen campers from the PEI Children’s Camp become great counsellors.

Health Care Team
The health care team at camp includes doctors, registered nurses, diabetes educators, student nurses, dietitians and dietetic interns. These professionals provide top-notch medical care to the campers and staff, and are a key part of the operation of PEI Children’s Camp. These qualified and dedicated professionals work closely with the campers and counsellors to ensure the utmost in diabetes education and management. The camping environment allows the campers to develop warm relationships with health professionals, enabling the children and youth to learn in a non-threatening atmosphere.

Fees
PEI Children’s Camp has a 3-Tiered Voluntary Pricing Program. We have implemented this for a few reasons: first, we recognize that our families have different abilities to pay. Second, we feel it is important that we begin to communicate the true cost of camp to our camper families. Historically, we have been charging roughly 25% of the true cost directly to our participants. This of course has placed a tremendous burden on the camp’s capacity. In order to continue to provide the camping services that we do for children with type 1 diabetes in Prince Edward Island, we need to take a more proactive approach in how we manage our subsidies. We hope to do this with the voluntary 3-tiered pricing program.

This year, we ask that you please take a moment to look at the rate descriptions and determine which of these three prices your family is able to pay for your child’s experience. This is strictly an honour system; select the fee you feel is appropriate and that is what you will pay. The program is voluntary, and in no way influences the experience a child will receive at camp. Please note that additional financial assistance with camp fees is still available via application for campership, but funds are limited. Also you need not apply for campership funds if you have the ability to pay any of the 3 tiers.

Tier 1: Lightly Subsidized = $350 ($250 + $100 deposit) per child
Tier 2: Partially Subsidized = $275 ($175 + $100 deposit) per child
Tier 3: Heavily Subsidized = $200 ($100 + $100 deposit) per child

There is a $100 non-refundable deposit that is required for all applications. Also, please note that payments for the camp fee are required to be paid in full by June 30th, 2011.

Application
The 2012 application process begins by going online to http://www.diabetes.ca/camps. Deadline for registration is April 20, 2011. Space is limited, therefore applications received after the deadline may not be considered.
