PEI Camp Red Fox: Counsellor in Training Program

The Counsellor in Training program is offered to youth who want to explore their independence, learn leadership skills and build a variety of camp skills and learn how to work with kids in a fun and challenging outdoor summer camp experience.

When: July 29 to August 3, 2012
Located: Located in beautiful Canoe Cove at the Canoe Cove Christian Camp.
Prerequisite: All applicants need to have successfully completed the PEI Leader in Training Program.

Program:
Participants in the CIT program are able to experience tremendous personal growth opportunities in a supportive, dynamic environment that offers a host of fun and challenging outdoor leadership experiences.

The CIT program puts further emphasis on teambuilding, goal-setting, communication and leadership skills. This program offers a community based approach to leadership. Participants will be able to apply skills to community and camps. It is a chance for learning and experiencing counselling, and program development. Participants will be spending time in a mentorship style approach working with their CIT director and the camp counsellors.

CITs are expected to meet the high expectations of being a camp role model for campers, LITs and peers at the PEI Children’s Camp

All applicants will go through an interview process before being accepted.

Selection Process
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and have completed the Camp Red Fox LIT program; this is a highly competitive program and so the application process is essential.

The process values can be broken down as such:

· 30% for applicant interview (10% leadership/volunteer/community experience, 10% experience with children, 5% reason for applying, 5% personality and demeanour)

· 20% for letter of intent and the application

· 10% personal references and LIT Director recommendations

· 40% Performance and Initiative shown during the Camp Red Fox LIT Program

All applicants will receive and interview that will be conducted by the Counselor in Training Director and the Camp Director. All interviews will be scheduled in advance around the applicant’s schedule. Applicants will have the option of a phone interview or an in person interview at the Canadian Diabetes Association office.

Camp Staff
Our camp staff members are wonderful, enthusiastic, responsible individuals who have experience working with kids in a recreational environment. All of our staff undergo a police record check before working at camp. They also go through a three-day staff training to better understand the skills needed to be a successful camp counsellor and work with kids living with diabetes.

CIT Director: The CIT Director is one of the most experienced individuals working at camp. They have experience as a counsellor and other leadership roles. They are professional and personal at the same time. The CIT Director teaches, mentors and supervises the CITs while at camp.

Health Care Team
The health care team at camp includes doctors, registered nurses, diabetes educators, student nurses, dietitians and dietetic interns. These professionals provide top-notch medical care to the campers and staff, and are a key part of the operation of PEI Children’s Camp. These qualified and dedicated professionals work closely with the campers and counsellors to ensure the utmost in diabetes education and management. The camping environment allows the campers to develop warm relationships with health professionals, enabling the children and youth to learn in a non-threatening atmosphere.

Fees
PEI CIT Program has a 3-Tiered Voluntary Pricing Program. We have implemented this for a few reasons: first, we recognize that our families have different abilities to pay. Second, we feel it is important that we begin to communicate the true cost of camp to our camper families. Historically, we have been charging roughly 25% of the true cost directly to our participants. This of course has placed a tremendous burden on the camp’s capacity. In order to continue to provide the camping services that we do for children with type 1 diabetes on Prince Edward Island, we need to take a more proactive approach in how we manage our subsidies. We hope to do this with the voluntary 3-tiered pricing program.

This year, we ask that you please take a moment to look at the rate descriptions and determine which of these three prices your family is able to pay for your child’s experience. This is strictly an honour system; select the fee you feel is appropriate and that is what you will pay. The program is voluntary, and in no way influences the experience a child will receive at camp. Please note that additional financial assistance with camp fees is still available via application for campership, but funds are limited. Also you need not apply for campership funds if you have the ability to pay any of the 3 tiers.

Tier 1: Lightly Subsidized = $425 ($325 + $100 deposit) per child
Tier 2: Partially Subsidized = $350 ($250 + $100 deposit) per child
Tier 3: Heavily Subsidized = $275 ($175 + $100 deposit) per child

There is a $100 non-refundable deposit that is required for all applications. Also, please note that payments for the camp fee are required to be paid in full by June 30th, 2011.

Application
The 2012 application process begins by going online to http://www.diabetes.ca/camps.

Deadline for registration is April 20th, 2012. Space is limited therefore, applications received after the deadline may not be considered.
