Camp Huronda (Huntsville, Ontario)

Accu Chek

This summer Camp Huronda will proudly celebrate its 40th Anniversary on Lake Waseosa!  Owned and operated by the Canadian Diabetes Association, Camp Huronda lies on a beautifully wooded peninsula on Lake Waseosa near Huntsville. This superb 110-acre setting offers permanent camp facilities for children with type 1 diabetes through carefully planned day and evening programs that provide your child with a summer of adventure, fun, activities, new skills, and health care. The camp offers four two-week sessions in July and August for 8–15 year olds, as well as two one-week sessions for 8–10 year olds in August. For the sixth summer, Huronda will also host a four-day Family Camp at the end of August.

Message from the New Camp Director

To all staff, campers and parents, new and returning: My name is Mike Filipowitsch, and I’m happy to be able to introduce myself to you as the new Director of Camp Huronda!

My camping experience began 15 years ago at YMCA Camp Belwood in Fergus, Ontario. Since those early years I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of some amazing staff teams at a variety of outdoor centres and residential camps in Ontario, holding just about every camp position available, including head chef! In 1994, camping lead me to Lakehead University where I studied Outdoor Recreation. Currently I’m finishing a specialized Bachelor of Education that emphasizes the experiential, ecological and environmental aspects of education. I will be conducting my placement in Huntsville this Spring, thus allowing me to move into Camp mid-March and immerse myself in the site.

I believe that camp is a community, a family that works together to create and facilitate activities and experiences that are meaningful and long lasting. I anticipate that over the duration of the summer we will all learn so much from one another. Please do not hesitate to contact me at anytime! Whether you have questions, or simply would like to say “hello”! I’m very excited to embark on this journey with all of you!

Sincerely,
Mike “Flip” Filipowitsch

Some Interesting Facts about Mike:
• Completed one full and six half marathons
• Competed in the USA 10km Snowshoe Running National Trials (in minus 40-degree weather)
• Frontman for the “Burt Neilson Band” (plays anything with strings and sings)
• Toured Canada over 25 times! Worked with First Nations group and on pilot projects for Parks Canada

Fees

Camp Huronda will be piloting a NEW “3-Tiered Voluntary Pricing Program” for the 2010 Summer. We have done this for a few reasons: first, we recognize that our families have different abilities to pay. Second, we feel it is important that we begin to communicate the true cost of camp to our camper families. Historically, we have been charging roughly 55% of the true cost directly to our participants. This of course has placed a tremendous burden on the camps’ capacity. In order to continue to provide the camping services that we do for children with type 1 diabetes in Ontario, we need to take a more proactive approach in how we manage our subsidies. We hope to do this with the voluntary 3-tiered pricing program.

This year, we ask that you please take a moment to look at the rate descriptions and determine which of these three prices your family is able to pay for your child’s experience. This is strictly an honour system; select the fee you feel is appropriate and that is what you will pay. The program is voluntary, and in no way influences the experience a child will receive at camp. Please note that additional financial assistance with camp fees is still available via application for campership.

2-week camping sessions:
Tier 1: Actual Cost = $2,485
Tier 2: Partially Subsidized = $1,880
Tier 3: Heavily Subsidized = $1,500

1-week camping sessions:
Tier 1: Actual Cost = $1,315
Tier 2: Partially Subsidized = $995
Tier 3: Heavily Subsidized = $800

Special activities and speakers are planned for everyone.
