Camp Huronda (Huntsville, Ontario)

Camp applications will be live on Tuesday February 7, 2012 at 11am Eastern time

Owned and operated by the Canadian Diabetes Association, Camp Huronda lies on a beautifully wooded peninsula on Lake Waseosa near Huntsville. This superb 110-acre setting offers permanent camp facilities for children with type 1 diabetes through carefully planned day and evening programs that provide your child with a summer of adventure, fun, activities, new skills, and health care. The camp offers four 2-week sessions in July and August for 8–15 year olds, as well as two 1-week sessions for 8–10 year olds in August. For the 7th summer, Huronda will also host a four-day Family Camp at the end of August.

Facilities
Campers stay in comfortable wood cabins with a live-in counsellor. The camp has a large recreation hall, a modern kitchen, a craft centre, health care facilities, a multi-purpose waterfront, washroom and shower facilities, and a large dining hall.

Leadership Development Program
This summer Camp Huronda will launch its first Leadership Development Program.  This program is for campers who will be 15 or 16 as of June 30, 2012. Under the supervision of two dedicated Leadership Instructors the LDP Participants will take part in a month-long program. Participants won’t just take part in camp activities but will actually learn how to teach them to campers. Components include:

1. Counselling Sessions: Camper Care, Leadership, Communication, etc.
2. Camp Skill Sessions: Canoeing, Archery, Low Ropes Facilitation, etc.
3. Certifications: including Standard First Aid, CPR ‘C’, AED, Bronze Medallion/Cross, High Five Principles of Healthy Childhood Development, Canoeing Certification
4. Cabin and Program Area Placements: Participants will take part in 2-3 placements lasting 1-3 days shadowing a cabin group or an area staff.
5. Leadership Canoe Trip: Four-five day trip in Algonquin Park focused on learning concrete trip leading skills.
6. Community-service project:  Participants will choose a service project that will benefit the camp community.  The work towards this project can be counted as volunteer community service hours for high school graduation.

Fees
Camp Huronda will once again be offering a “3-Tiered Voluntary Pricing Program” for the 2012 summer. We have done this for a few reasons: first, we recognize that our families have different abilities to pay. Second, we feel it is important that we begin to communicate the true cost of camp to our camper families. Historically, we have been charging roughly 55% of the true cost directly to our participants. This of course has placed a tremendous burden on the camps’ capacity. In order to continue to provide the camping services that we do for children with type 1 diabetes in Ontario, we need to take a more proactive approach in how we manage our subsidies. We hope to achieve this with the continuation of the voluntary 3-tiered pricing program.

We ask that you please take a moment to look at the rate descriptions below and determine which of these three prices your family is able to pay for your child’s experience. This is strictly an honour system; select the fee you feel is appropriate and that is what you will pay. The program is voluntary, and in no way influences the experience a child will receive at camp.

2-week camping sessions:
Tier 1: Actual Cost = $2,600
Tier 2: Partially Subsidized = $1,950
Tier 3: Heavily Subsidized = $1,550

1-week camping sessions:
Tier 1: Actual Cost = $1,350
Tier 2: Partially Subsidized = $1,100
Tier 3: Heavily Subsidized = $850

Leadership Development Program: $1,500
Please note that additional financial assistance with camp fees is still available via application for campership.

Food Storage
Unfortunately, the kitchen is not able to store food for campers except in the most extreme circumstances, which will be discussed on an individual basis. Issues around food safety and space limitations have forced us to make this decision in order to decrease potential risk to campers and staff. We would be happy to answer any questions with respect to dietary concerns – please email Ruth Lynch for more information.
