Leadership Training Program (Nova Scotia)
Camp applications will be live on Tuesday February 7, 2012 at 11am Eastern time
The internationally recognized Leadership training program began in 1988. The program provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to work effectively with children in a camping environment and to be leaders in their communities.
Who: Participants must be 15 or 16 years of age as of August 1st to apply. Successful applicants should be optimistic, energetic, responsible, mature, willing to take initiative and have an enthusiastic approach to all aspects of camp.
Location: Participants are required to attend both Camps Lion Maxwell and Camp Morton.
Date: The Leadership Trainees must attend both Camps Lion Maxwell and Camp Morton. July 8 – July 13, 2012 and August 14 – August 19, 2012.
Program: Your child will be undertaking a great experience in leadership, community initiative skills and counsellor skills. This program was created for teenagers to engage in a recreational environment while challenging them to learn new skills and furthering their own personal growth in camping. Here are some of the activities and sessions that we have at camp for LITs;
- Group Initiative Tasks
- Group Dynamics
- Communication Skills
- Camp Programming, campfires and Games
- Trust building
- Team building
- Problem solving
- Learning how to work with kids
- Understanding behavioural management
- How to work in a camp setting
The LIT program is a transitional camp experience and serves as a springboard for campers to gain leadership, problem solving, and group skills. Also, the program provides experience and knowledge that LITs can use as future camp counsellors.
About our Staff
Most of our counsellors and program staff live with diabetes, and all work closely along side the campers and with the health care professionals in diabetes management. The counselling, leadership, and health professional staff’s number one priority is to provide a safe, fun and memorable experience for the campers, focusing on diabetes management and day to day living.
LIT Director/ LIT Assistant: The LIT Director and assistant are some of the most experienced individuals working at camp. They have experience as a counsellor and other leadership roles. They are professional and personal at the same time. The LIT Director and assistant will be teaching, mentoring, and supervising the LITs while at camp.
Health Care Team
The Health Care Team at camp includes doctors, registered nurses, diabetes educators, student nurses, dieticians and dietetic interns. These professionals provide top-notch medical care to the campers and staff, and are a key part of the operation of Camp Lion Maxwell. These qualified and dedicated professionals work closely with the campers and counsellors to ensure the utmost in diabetes education and management. The camping environment allows the campers to develop warm relationships with health professionals, enabling the children and youth to learn in a non-threatening atmosphere.
Fees
NS Leadership Program has a 3-Tiered Voluntary Pricing Program. We have implemented this for a few reasons: first, we recognize that our families have different abilities to pay. Second, we feel it is important that we begin to communicate the true cost of camp to our camper families. Historically, we have been charging roughly 25% of the true cost directly to our participants. This of course has placed a tremendous burden on the camp’s capacity. In order to continue to provide the camping services that we do for children with type 1 diabetes in Nova Scotia, we need to take a more proactive approach in how we manage our subsidies. We hope to do this with the voluntary 3-tiered pricing program.
This year, we ask that you please take a moment to look at the rate descriptions and determine which of these three prices your family is able to pay for your child’s experience. This is strictly an honour system; select the fee you feel is appropriate and that is what you will pay. The program is voluntary, and in no way influences the experience a child will receive at camp. Please note that additional financial assistance with camp fees is still available via application for campership, but funds are limited. Also you need not apply for campership funds if you have the ability to pay any of the 3 tiers.
Tier 1: Lightly Subsidized = $750 ($650 + $100 deposit) per child
Tier 2: Partially Subsidized = $625 ($525 + $100 deposit) per child
Tier 3: Heavily Subsidized = $500 ($400 + $100 deposit) per child
There is a $100 non-refundable deposit that is required for all applications. Also, please note that payments for the camp fee are required to be paid in full by May 27th, 2012.
