Canadian Diabetes Association applauds parties for their commitment to people living with diabetes
Halifax, Nova Scotia (February 7, 2013) – The Canadian Diabetes Association is pleased with the recent announcement that both Nova Scotia opposition parties, the Progressive Conservative and the Liberal Party, have committed support for a publicly-funded insulin pump program for Nova Scotians living with type 1 diabetes to ensure they are better able to manage their condition and improve their quality of life.
“The investment in an insulin pump program will not only improve the health of Nova Scotians living with diabetes, it will also more than pay for itself through reduced direct healthcare costs,” says Lisa Matte, Maritimes Regional Director for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Nova Scotia is currently one of two provinces in Canada that does not offer a publicly-funded insulin pump program. People with type 1 diabetes who are clinically eligible to use a pump to better manage their disease face average out-of-pocket expenses totaling between $4,000 and $7,000 per year, which are costs that few can afford.
“The Canadian Diabetes Association is hopeful that the government will make a commitment to a publicly-funded insulin pump program,” adds Matte. “Our previous research has shown the cost savings produced through an insulin pump program would be $1.4 million by 2032.”
