MP for the Yukon, Ryan Leef, will be circumnavigating the Yukon border to raise $100,000 for CDA
Member of Parliament for the Yukon, Ryan Leef, will be circumnavigating the Yukon border to raise $100,000 and awareness for the Canadian Diabetes Association. The “Border to Border” (B2B) trek, which falls under Mr. Leef’s banner of “INSPIRATION UNLIMITED”, will be done over the course of three summers starting in 2013.
The fight to end diabetes is a particularly worthy cause and of concern to Mr. Leef as it is the single largest health issue in northern Canada. Diabetes rates among aboriginal people are 3 to 5 times higher than the Canadian population and women in the north are more likely to live with diabetes than men, a reverse reality to the rest of the provinces. In fact, nearly 21% of citizens in the Yukon over the age of 64 have diabetes.
As a Member of Parliament, it is his belief that he has a duty to work beyond the standard expectations of the role. Mr. Leef also believes that if we better our understanding, treatment and prevention of diabetes we will see improvements in a wide range of personal and community outcomes. Through his B2B trek, he is striving to inspire and affect change by using his unique qualities and character and promoting healthy, active lifestyles.
Mr. Leef’s B2B trek will help bring attention to diabetes as no person has ever navigated the entire border of the Yukon Territory on foot! The total journey will exceed 3,000 kilometres and will encompass a variety of challenges including the largest non-polar ice field in the world, the second largest wetlands, three National Parks, several major rivers, mountain ranges and crossing the Arctic Circle. Plus there are potential encounters with grizzly and black bears and a multitude of other species.
The funds raised through Mr. Leef’s campaign will support the important work of the Canadian Diabetes Association in the Yukon and across Canada. All donations made to the Association are eligible for a tax receipt and will go directly to our mission to lead the fight against diabetes by helping people with diabetes live healthy lives while we work to find a cure.
