Canadian Diabetes Association presents Charles H. Best Award to Cathy Wilson
KELOWNA, BRITISH COLUMBIA (October 22, 2012) - The Canadian Diabetes Association has presented Cathy Wilson of Kelowna, British Columbia with the 2012 Charles H. Best Award. This prestigious national award recognizes a health professional who has made a significant difference in improving the quality of life for Canadians living with diabetes.
Cathy Wilson is a Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator in Kelowna at the Central Okanagan Diabetes Program and also is a Certified Pump Trainer in the Central Okanagan area. Ms. Wilson's own son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at three years of age.
Ms. Wilson was presented with the Charles H. Best Award in recognition of both her professional and voluntary contributions in support of children living with diabetes. She has been a driving force behind many initiatives such as:
- Establishing a local support group for parents.
- Making insulin pump training available locally by acquiring the education and providing the training herself.
- Advocating for the needs of children with diabetes in schools.
- Working with local service clubs to help children and families attend diabetes camp despite financial limitations.
- Participating in the development of a guide for families and healthcare professionals caring for children with type 1 diabetes.
"Cathy is a most deserving recipient of the Charles H. Best Award. She is already well recognized in our community and by her peers as an outstanding professional within the field, with specialized knowledge and passion for pediatric diabetes care," said Glenna Armstrong, Branch Coordinator for the Canadian Diabetes Association, Interior B.C. Region. "Local children with diabetes benefit tremendously from both her professional and volunteer contributions. She is known for always going above and beyond."
"The Canadian Diabetes Association is thrilled to formally acknowledge the outstanding work of our volunteers and supporters through our national awards program. They are critical to the success of our mission delivery," said Michael Cloutier, President & CEO of the Canadian Diabetes Association. "Cathy Wilson has demonstrated a true dedication to making a difference in the lives of more than nine million Canadians who are living with diabetes or prediabetes. On behalf of the Association, I'd like to congratulate Cathy for her tremendous contributions and express our sincere appreciation for all those who were nominated."
Ms. Wilson was recognized at the Association's National Awards Presentation recently held in Vancouver. The event is held in conjunction with the Canadian Diabetes Association's Professional Conference and National Annual General Meeting. The 15th Annual Canadian Diabetes Association and Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism Professional Conference brings together more than 2,500 leading diabetes clinicians, researchers and educators from across Canada and around the world to share their knowledge, ideas and experiences on diabetes.
The conference serves as an important opportunity to collaborate and share the latest ground-breaking research aimed at helping those with diabetes to live healthier lives while the Association and researchers they fund continue to work towards finding a cure.
