Canadian Diabetes Association Camps make a difference for SK children, families, and volunteers
Summertime signals camping season, and the Canadian Diabetes Association (Saskatchewan) once again hosted two unique camp experiences that have made a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of young people, as well as children and their families, and young volunteers.
Conexus Children’s Camp -- The week of July 24th – 28th, 66 Saskatchewan children living with type 1 diabetes took part in Conexus Children’s Camp, the Canadian Diabetes Association’s annual week-long overnight camping program at Manitou Beach, Saskatchewan. This more than half-century old tradition that has given many children living with type 1 diabetes in the province what is often their first experience away from home. It also fosters an opportunity to learn independence and self-management of their diabetes in a medically supervised environment, all while having fun with other youth who face similar challenges. The CDA was pleased to welcome representatives from Conexus at Camp on July 27th.
Family Camp –- Continuing at Camp Easter Seal, on the heels of Conexus Children’s Camp, the CDA hosted its annual Family Camp (July 29 – Aug. 1st ) - a camping experience for children with type 1diabetes and their families, and an opportunity to learn about diabetes management together alongside their peers. A unique aspect to Family Camp is the Association’s Leaders in Training (LIT) program, wherein youth volunteers who are Children’s Camp veterans become volunteer camp counselors, guiding activities for the often newly diagnosed participants of Family Camp. A film crew from SHAW was on site on July 30 to learn about Family Camp and the LIT program, for a future “Together is Amazing” campaign.
According to Brie Hnetka, Manager of Public Programs & Services for the Canadian Diabetes Association (Saskatchewan), both camps are an excellent example of community engagement. “From the generosity of our partners like Conexus – who allow our programming to shine – to the time and energy of our young Leaders in Training – who are helping our newly diagnosed campers find confidence and have fun – and the courage and openness of all of our participants, our Camps are a truly collaborative and quite often, life changing. We’re so proud to continue to offer these kinds of experiences to the Saskatchewan community.”
