LONDON, ON (January 22, 2013) - Today at a special event with Susan Truppe, Member of Parliament for London North Centre and Parliamentary Secretary for Status of Women, Banting House National Historic Site of Canada (NHSC) will receive the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) – a grant that will help fund a project to restore and maintain the birthplace of insulin.

“This is very exciting news to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Banting House NHSC and the many volunteers and donors who support this unique and special place,” says Sue Taylor, Regional Director, Southwest Ontario, Canadian Diabetes Association. “We are very grateful for the funding and look forward to ensuring Banting House NHSC is maintained for future generations.”

Banting House NHSC will receive $147,419 to support a restoration project beginning this year. Located in London, Ontario and built in 1900, Banting House NHSC is a public site dedicated to representing and preserving the national historic significance of Sir Frederick Banting. It was at Banting House NHSC that Dr. Banting conceived the idea that led to the discovery of insulin and saved millions of lives.

“Banting House is an important part of Canadian history,” says Truppe, “for many people affected by diabetes, it represents how far we’ve come and hope for a cure.”

The Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario provides $150 million for the repair and improvement of community infrastructure facilities across the country. It was introduced as part of the Economic Action Plan in 2012.
