Banting House celebrates World Diabetes Day

Student walk, exhibition opening and blue light-up part of day's events

LONDON, ON (Nov. 12, 2012) -November 14th marks World Diabetes Day (WDD) and the 121st birthday of the co-discoverer of insulin, Sir Frederick G. Banting. Banting House National Historic Site of Canada (NHSC) - the birthplace of insulin - hosts an exciting line-up of events to celebrate.


Global Diabetes Walk

Who:
Approximately 1400 students and staff from Sir Frederick G. Banting Secondary School.

What: Students and staff walk 30 minutes to raise funds and collect used clothing to benefit the Canadian Diabetes Association. Cheque presentation will take place later in the evening at Banting House NHSC (see below).

When: World Diabetes Day, November 14, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Where: Sir Frederick G Banting Secondary School, 125 Sherwood Forest Square, London, ON


Dear Dr. Banting

Who:
All welcome. Free Admission to Banting House NHSC

What : Banting House NHSC will light up in blue to recognize WDD and launch the opening of the Dear Dr. Banting exhibit. Those whose lives have been touched by diabetes and inspired by the discovery of insulin wrote letters sharing their gratitude, struggles, emotional journeys and hopes for a cure. A comparison of letters written to Dr. Banting from 1924 to 1934 and from 2005 to 2012 will be on display at the museum.

There will also be a cheque presentation and to the Canadian Diabetes Association from the students of Sir Frederick G. Banting Secondary School and the Delaware Lions who have been dedicated fundraisers since 1983.

When: World Diabetes Day, Nov. 14, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Where: Banting House NHSC, 442 Adelaide Street North, London, ON

Over 1.2 million Ontarians are living with diabetes - by 2020, that number is expected to rise to over 1.9 million. If not treated or properly managed, diabetes can result in serious and life-threatening complications such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness or amputation.
