Notice of 2011 Regional Annual Meeting for Members

The Canadian Diabetes Association is leading the fight against diabetes by helping people with diabetes live healthy lives while we work to find a cure.

It’s that time of year again, and we are inviting Canadian Diabetes Association members to attend their upcoming Regional Annual Meeting. It’s a great time to collaborate with other members, learn more about our past year’s results, and help to identify Association priorities for the coming year!

If an election is necessary, you can vote for your regional chair or delegate in person at the meeting, itself, or by mail-in ballot. Mail-in ballots and instructions will be sent to you by mail. Remember, your vote is the key to ensuring that your region’s point of view is represented at our National Annual General Meeting in the Fall.

Please note, Association bylaws require a quorum of 10 members or more to be present at the Regional Annual Meeting in order for votes to be valid.

We look forward to seeing you! Your participation will help us continue to establish significant milestones on our journey towards a future without diabetes.

Camp Dia-Best

imageHelp support Camp Dia-Best

Each summer Camp Dia-Best, located at Camp Rotary on beautiful Grand Lake, hosts an educational and fun-filled retreat for children ages 7-14 with type 1 diabetes. For one week, campers enjoy a variety of activities including canoeing, swimming and campfires, while learning diabetes management skills. In the summer of 2010, Tammy Sterling’s daughter, Madi, attended Camp Dia-Best. Here is her story:

I’m the proud mother of Madi - a smart, beautiful and happy 10-year old girl who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 4. This came as a surprise since there is no history of diabetes in our family. Even though it was a shock, my husband and I were relieved it was a disease that could be managed.

Growing up in the Grand Lake area, we’ve heard about Camp Dia-Best for many years and tried to convince Madi to attend. We even brought her to visit the camp in hopes of eliminating nerves, but she was not ready. What made the difference for Madi was meeting a girl in her dance class that had already attended camp and loved it. And so, in the summer of 2010, Madi made the decision to attend Camp Dia-Best.

During the time Madi was away at camp, I found myself not knowing what to do with my time - not having blood sugars, carbs or insulin dosages on the brain. I reminded myself that if I could get through this first week at camp, the coming years would be easier. Madi, on the other hand, was having a wonderful experience. Her favourite activities were archery, swimming, scavenger hunts and playing pranks on the boys! She made three new friends and enjoyed her camp councillors, especially McGiver and Dive.

Madi has never been concerned about how having diabetes would impact what she wanted to do in life. However, after attending Camp Dia-Best, she felt a sense of pride in being able to manage diabetes while being away from home. She shared with us how she treated her “lows” at camp, how it was really neat to be with a group of kids who also had diabetes, and what her eating schedule was like. This experience showed me that my daughter knows much more than I give her credit for some times. It made me realize that when she forgets to check her sugar or give herself insulin, it does not mean she is incapable of managing her diabetes. It simply means that she is a kid, who just happens to have diabetes. Like all kids, as she grows and experiences life’s challenges, she will become better at looking after herself; and programs like Camp Dia-
Best will give her these skills.
