New Drugs and financial Coverage

Diabetes Report 2005 – How does PEI Measure up

CDA is continuing work to encourage the adding of new drugs to the provincial formula. On December 13, 2005 the Advocacy Chair, Andrea Lemeiux, Regional Director Shirley Berry and Camp Physician Dr. Peter Noonan met with the Minister of Health Chester Gillan to discuss this issue along with asking government to consider a program that would assist those who have no medical coverage with the coverage of their diabetes supplies.

There seems to be a genuine effort on government’s part, they listened and have requested an estimated of such a program. We provided this estimate to the Minister of Health, Chester Gillen for such a program.

The Canadian Diabetes Association believes that people with diabetes should have timely access to medication, supplies and medical devices that can improve their immediate quality of life and that may decrease the likelihood of future interventions which are often more costly and less effective.

As well, federal, provincial and territorial governments should commit to a strategy such that the cost to the individual of diabetes medication, supplies and medical devices, as well as the costs associated with diabetes-related complications, are not a barrier or a burden to managing diabetes.
