Beyond the Basics
Meal Planning Poster
New medications and new methods for the management of diabetes have produced changes in diabetes education and a new meal planner guide. The new guide, entitled Beyond the Basics: Meal Planning for Healthy Eating, Diabetes Prevention and Management, is compatible with Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide and with the systems used in Quebec and the US. The biggest change is in food groups containing carbohydrate (Grains & Starches, Fruits, Milk & Alternatives, Other Choices) where one serving of a food in each of these groups will contain 15 g of available carbohydrate.
The Beyond the Basics: Meal Planning for Healthy Eating, Diabetes Prevention and Management poster and Resource is available for purchase from the On-line Order Desk.

Longer Lists of foods to be used with the Beyond the Basics
Due to space restrictions, the Beyond the Basics poster contained only a limited number of foods. This longer list of foods will allow for greater variety in meal planning. The foods are listed within their food group in alphabetical order, with the ‘choose more often’ choices first. The larger selection of foods will make meals more interesting and enjoyable for the whole family.
The food groups have been separated to make it easier for you to download the section you are interested in.
