Low Glycemic Index Diet to Improve Glycemic Control and Cardiovascular Disease in Type 2 Diabetes

Institutions involved: St. Michael’s Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

Investigators involved: David Jenkins, Cyril Kendall, Robert Josse, Lawrence Leiter, Thomas Wolever, John Sievenpiper, Alan Moody

Funding source: Canadian Institute of Health Research

Inclusion criteria: Healthy individuals with type 2 diabetes

Brief abstract of project and relevance: Healthy individuals with type 2 diabetes will receive intensive counseling on food selection to improve glucose control using either high cereal fiber dietary or low glycemic index strategies.  Treatments will last 3 years with bloods taken for HbA1c, glucose and blood lipids and arterial damage assessed by carotid ultrasound (CUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).  If the study shows a benefit for either or both diets, then use of high fiber and/or low glycemic index foods in the diet may provide another potential way to improve glucose control and cholesterol levels and reduce arterial damage in type 2 diabetics.
