The Canadian Diabetes Association’s community-based network of volunteers, employees, healthcare professionals, researchers and partners are committed to leading the fight, helping people with diabetes, living healthy and advancing our search towards a cure.
Today, more than 9 million Canadians are living with diabetes or prediabetes. That’s 1 in 4 Canadians - children, parents, aunts and uncles, close friends and colleagues - the harsh reality is that you likely know someone who is living with diabetes or prediabetes.
Prediabetes is a condition where the blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. If left unchecked, having prediabetes puts you at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Each year, diabetes costs the Canadian economy $12.2 billion, and, by 2020, it’s expected to rise to $16.9 billion. The Association recently published An Economic Tsunami: The Cost of Diabetes in Canada. This report introduces an important new tool in the fight against diabetes - the Canadian Cost Model - which provides new insight into the prevalence and costs of diabetes in Canada. Diabetes is not only a personal crisis for the people living with the disease; it is also a tremendous financial burden for the Canadian healthcare system and society as a whole.
Join the Association - and it’s thousands of active supporters - from coast-to-coast-to-coast in pledging to take action and lead the fight against diabetes this November and beyond!
