Rufus Dorsey - Vancouver, BC

No one would suspect that Rufus Dorsey is living with type 2 diabetes. He is an actor and licensed physical fitness trainer, works out two hours every day and supervises his clients’ workouts. His physical regimen, love for sports and occupation keep him on top of his diabetes.

Rufus remembers being depressed when he was initially diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 17. “I thought my life was over. It was the worst feeling I’ve ever felt in my life. I wouldn’t wish that feeling on my worst enemy.” He credits Elsie, his single-parent mom, for rescuing him from the abyss of depression and giving him motivation and hope that he could remain healthy and active.

People with diabetes can benefit from information, education and support to manage their diabetes well, in addition to access to quality medical care. “The Canadian Diabetes Association provides educational support to those living with or at risk of having diabetes,” Dorsey says.

Because of his love for sports and his passion for healthy lifestyles, Rufus encourages people to sign up for a Team Diabetes event. “Through Team Diabetes, the Association’s national activity fundraising program, people with diabetes and those affected by the disease can find fun and active ways to unite in the fight against diabetes.”
