Being diagnosed with diabetes often impacts the individual who manages the disease as well as the entire family. This is how Vic Gouthro of Sydney, Cape Breton, describes his family’s outlook when their son Scott was diagnosed at the age of 15.

“When we as a family were first diagnosed, we knew nothing about diabetes,” recalls Vic. “We visited our local Diabetes Education Centre and quickly became introduced to the Canadian Diabetes Association.”

A retired educator and school principal, Vic became a dedicated and avid volunteer with the Association. With roles as regional chair of the National Advocacy Council, third-party fundraiser and Team Diabetes participant, Vic takes his commitment to leading the fight against diabetes very seriously.

In his quest to support the Association’s leading-edge research, Vic initiated fundraising and awareness events. “Cycle for the Cure” involved Vic and his son Scott riding a tandem bike around the Cabot Trail; more recently, “Going the Distance” included a cycling, running and walking event to get children and families involved. “I’m excited to get kids involved in physical activity to make them aware of the importance of an active lifestyle,” says Vic.

Vic also speaks very passionately about his advocacy volunteer work. “The MLA receptions are critical because they allow volunteers, health professionals, and staff to speak directly to politicians,” he says.

Vic looks forward to continuing his volunteer work for the Association, as well as the day when a cure is found. “There are so many great causes in our community and it’s important to get involved to help other people and make the world a better place.”
