Sue Boutilier - Halifax, NS
Sue Boutilier does not have much of a memory of life without diabetes. The Halifax resident explains that, for over 30 years, diabetes has been part of how she lives her life and she is continually taking action to try to attain balance.
Family is Sue’s inspiration for being an active person in the community, which is evident in her advocacy and volunteer work for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
“Anyone whose life has been touched by diabetes knows that it is very much a family disease,” explains Sue. “Everyone is a part of the continual juggling to attain a balance and no one in the family is left unscathed by the effects of the highs and lows.”
Physical activity plays a key role in helping Sue manage her disease. She loves to run and it has given her an outlet for coping both physically and spiritually.
“As someone who loves to run, the marathon was always a lifetime goal and the Team Diabetes program provided me the opportunity to complete a marathon for a cause that is very close to my heart.”
Being a voice for people with diabetes is also an important part of Sue’s passion. Attending the first official United Nations World Diabetes Day at the UN Headquarters in New York still resonates with Sue, and she developed her own United Nations Resolution on diabetes. “November 14, World Diabetes Day, is celebrated on the birth date of Sir Frederick Banting, a Canadian doctor and researcher to whom I owe my life.”
