A perfect summer day…
A perfect summer day is one where the sun is shining, you have just started your holidays and the latest issue of Diabetes Dialogue has just arrived in your mailbox. Bundled with the summer issue of Diabetes Dialogue is the much anticipated 2009 edition of both Your Guide to Diabetes Medications and the Consumer’s Guide to Diabetes Products. For the first time, these guides will be combined into one, easy supplement. So sit back on your favourite lawn chair, relax and start reading.
The cover feature in this issue is about the award winning singer-songwriter Dan Hill. He discusses his father’s life with diabetes, a disease which his father considered a weakness and which eventually led to his death from complications. Although it is often tempting for people to ignore their diabetes, it is much more rewarding to take affirmative action through lifestyle modification and aggressive
risk modification to prevent the complications of diabetes from occurring. Dan Hill chose the latter path and talks openly about his life and his positive attitude in maintaining his health despite his diabetes.
Susan Pedwell writes about the growing worldwide diabetes epidemic and invites everyone to attend the International Diabetes Federation’s 20th World Congress to be held this October in Montréal. This unique event is held for everyone affected by diabetes, and is concerned with making a difference in improving diabetes care until such a time when a cure is found.
The article by Marlene Oliveira describes the Canadian Diabetes Association’s summer camp programs for children and youth affected by diabetes. Not only do the campers benefit from the expertise of the healthcare professionals who volunteer there, but the healthcare professionals learn even more about the human side of diabetes through the children they meet, and find the experience very rewarding.
Rosie Schwartz describes all the health benefits of your favourite berries and provides some mouth-watering recipes. And, finally, Barb Gormley offers practical and inexpensive exercise solutions to improve your blood glucose levels and your overall health.
So sit back, read, enjoy the magnificence of summer and all the joy that it brings; and please be safe.
